Tours Update for February

Snow on Friday

We had 3-4 inches of snow on Friday! If you are planning a trip to the farm for our open house on Sunday, be prepared for a little mud. Plan accordingly. The farm will be open, and we have over 80 babies on the ground!

A Farmstead Artisan Cheese Business

South Mountain Dairy is located in Southern Santa Fe County at the base of South Mountain in the East Mountains of Albuquerque. We are a farmstead, artisan cheese business. Farmstead because we use only the milk from the goats who are raised on our farm. Artisan because we make our cheeses by hand.

Our History

In 1996, we bought two kinder goats (Nubian, Nigerian Dwarf cross-breeds) to eat our weeds. We enjoyed the boys so much, that we decided to raise pack goats. We knew the best packers are those who are bottle raised. Knowing that goats are herd animals, we decided to get two does. We bred the girls, they had babies, and we started bottle feeding the kids. But the babies didn't drink all of the milk that the girls produced, so we had to decide what to do with the milk. We bought a book, and learned how to make some great cheese, but we couldn't eat it all ourselves. And we couldn't legally sell it if we were not Licensed Grade A.

As they say...the rest is history.

Today we raise Sable Sannans, Oberhasli, and La Mancha goats at La Farmita. In addition to our dairy goats, we also keep some of the neutered males for Pack Goats, and we have four of our own bucks.

But at South Mountain Dairy, it's ALL about the girls!

We sell pasteurized milk, drinkable yogurt, and a variety of cheeses. Our dairy products will be avaiable to purchase on the farm during tours, and at several local farmers markets. This year we will also expand our business to provide a limited offering of cheeses online, beginning in June.

Goats for Sale

We will have goats in milk available for sale beginning in April, as well as doelings, bucklings, and wethers.
